Stewart Jackson on the Newark Result

[A]NDIE HARPER: The Conservatives secured their seat in Newark last night with a majority of more than seven thousand. The resignation of their former Conservative MP Patrick Mercer had raised expectations in UKIP that they could cause a major upset by winning their first Westminster seat. But the Conservatives flooded the seat with MPs and activists in the run up to polling day, with David Cameron visiting the Nottinghamshire market town four times, this in their bid to retain what was in theory a safe seat. So, is it a victory to celebrate, or are the parties terrified, as Paul Bullen has .. suggested? Let’s talk now to Stewart Jackson, the Conservative MP for Peterborough. Stewart, good morning to you.

PAUL STAINTON: David Cameron didn’t show a lot of love to our Cambridgeshire MPs yesterday. Andrew Lansley demoted to Leader of the House, Jonathan Djanogly of Huntingdon lost his job as Justice Minister. And earlier, former MP and GP Dr Richard Taylor told us he was flabbergasted by Mr Lansley’s demotion, and doubted Jeremy Hunt’s credentials to take on the health portfolio. (TAPE)
DR RICHARD TAYLOR: I think Cameron wants to get rid of him, because he knows he has made himself very unpopular. But, to give him his credit, he has worked incredibly hard, and studied the NHS for years and years, because he was the Shadow Heath Secretary. Now the worry about Hunt is that he comes in, what is his background? We know very very little about him. What does he know about health? (LIVE)
PAUL STAINTON: Well despite being a critic of Mr Lansley’s changes. Dr Taylor wanted the South Cambridgeshire MP to stay on in the role. He also said the changes raised more questions than answers. (TAPE)
DR RICHARD TAYLOR: Is it a sign that David Cameron is genuinely thinking of watering down the proposals somewhat? Is it for Jeremy Hunt a reward for the Olympics? Or is it a punishment for Murdoch for giving him what is an absolutely impossible job? (LIVE)

Jim Paice on EU Hen Welfare Measures and the Consumer

CHRIS MANN: The Agriculture Minister Jim Paice is today issuing advice to British consumers, so they can be sure they don’t buy battery eggs, once the EU-wide ban comes in on New Year’s Day. Mr Paice, the MP for South East Cambridgeshire, talked to me about the ban during a visit to Cambridge today. 13 out of 27 nations in the EU say they will not comply with the ban. The Government says it has taken steps to protect UK farmers from being undercut, by gaining agreement by supermarkets not to sell illegal eggs, as Mr Paice explained to me. (TAPE)
JIM PAICE: Well in the UK we’re very certain that it’s almost 100%. There will be a small number of producers still in the old battery systems, but in the UK they will virtually all have gone by the end of January.
